The sixth sense of a woman: Truth or myth?

Posted on 10 de Março de 2014

El-sexto-sentidoYou may at some point of life have encountered with the statement about the “sixth sense of a woman.” And today, while reading the sacred book, in the Book of Esther, this statement came to mind again and I decided to write this short text on the subject, and perhaps a bit satirist.

Firstly, we need to seek to understand the term “the sixth sense of a woman”, something that goes beyond the limits of biology. Humans are endowed with five basic senses: hearing, smell, taste, touch and sight. These allow our relationship with the environment. With these senses, our body realizes what is around us, and it allows us to survive and integrate with the environment in which we live. Since this is an indisputable biological fact, we are obliged to change the field and leave the biological sphere and enter the sphere of metaphysics and cosmology, as these areas deals with the human being in a more comprehensive manner.

In our search for the sixth sense in the field of metaphysics and cosmology we are redirected to parapsychology that through research conducted over the years, and fort my “critical ” view it did not lead anywhere, says that women and homosexuals  for reasons of “sensitivity” [1] develop this intuitive sense. This position of parapsychology seems very vague and merely supported by behavioral assumptions. However, even in the field of cosmological metaphysics we seek understanding for the sixth sense in spirituality as Ernani Fornari, author of Fogo Sagrado, explains: ” The holistic worldview is reinforced in the years 1970 and 1980, the shamanism, a movement trying to rescue the culture of people from North and South American, African, Siberian, Hawaiian, Australian, among others . One of its main tenets is the multidimensional reality of the universe, which presents the idea that the five senses and the rational mind are not enough for contact with other levels of existence. It is the sixth sense that can open doors to a multidimensional conscious life.”[2] In the conception of Ernani Fornari the sixth sense, linked to shamanism, is not restricted only to women, but any individual can develop it. In this concept, we are faced with a question of empiricism which asserts that knowledge comes only or primarily from sensorial experience.

In philosophical terms how to conceive the possibility of a sixth sense would be through empiricism, which in this case obviously would make room for all experiments since parapsychology, shamanism and even the kabbalisticism which is a set of esoteric elements.

In the Sacred Scripture, the Bible, there is no mention of the sixth sense. No woman in the Bible, not even Mary, the mother of the Lord, was equipped with this sense. As a Christian philosopher I consider this idea of the sixth sense a heresy, as to validate its existence and possibility, we would have to enter through the gates of syncretism and empiricism and abandon the principle of Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone).

When we look at the Scripture, we face a very different reality postulated by some women and men about the idea of the woman as the bearer of the sixth sense. From the beginning, we see the woman being deceived, as was Eve in Eden. The apostle Paul seems to disagree with the existence of a sixth sense, as we can observe : “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve in his craftiness, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity and the purity that is toward Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:3)

The doctrine of total depravity would also be another case against this possibility, because even if that sense existed, as the apostle said, our senses were corrupted. The word used by Paul in this text which was translated into several versions “mind,” νοημα, involves much more than an ability to feel and think, but even intuition and everything that passes through the channel of reasoning and mind.

Besides Eve, we could explore a series of biblical narratives where the possibility of a sixth sense in women is an absurd imagination and popular belief. Biblical examples are many, so I decided to name four cases for our reflection and let this challenge you to study this subject in the Bible by yourself. The first case to cite is that of Eve in Eden , she was deceived by the serpent (Genesis 3) , and if a snake was able to fool a woman and get her to lead all mankind to fall , what the actor George Clooney would be able to do with her. The second biblical example I want to mention is the wife of Job, that suggested to Job to curse God (Job 2:9). The third example is Sapphire, that with all her senses did not warn her husband not to lie to the church (Acts 5:1-2) . And lastly , and I know that would make some people uncomfortable here, is Mary,  the mother of Jesus, which was rebuked by him several times for exceeding her senses, as we note, for instance, in the narrative of Matthew 12 when Mary tried to stop Jwsus’s preaching to apparently discuss with him some home and family matters , Jesus reply was: “But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand towards his disciples, and said, Behold, my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother. (Matthew 12:48-50). “The answer of Jesus, once again is intended to draw a clear line on his nature and mission. He was not of this world, and therefore, would do not take part with the things of this life. He came to search for and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10), this was his focus, therefore, those that heard him were his family, his most significant relationship. If his mother and brothers wanted to enjoy his mission, they should engage with him and the others. Nothing, absolutely nothing, would remove Jesus from his focus. “[3]. As I said, the list would be enormous!

What I want with this short text is not decreasing and disrespect women, but, undo an illogical myth and and say that woman like all human being was greeted with equal faculties and senses, in the case of the senses we have both men and women, enjoying five. The superstition that a man must always give attention to the sixth a sense of the woman shows to us that it does not work to comprise with the Holy Scriptures, it has no biological support neither historical. My article does not intend to emancipate men from their responsibility to consult their wives in some important decisions, but never be influenced by a nonexistent sense. The best option for both is prayer and seeking the counsel of God which never fails: “[…] who is wonderful in counsel […]” (Isaiah 28:29).
